Timberline: Rock Canyon and a different
visitor
(Timberline
part 23)
One year I was asked to visit a
course from our district that was being held in the Rock Canyon Campground up
Rock Canyon from the Provo Temple about 2 miles. They had hiked the boys in that
Monday from the mouth of the canyon even though it could be reached by driving
up from a road in Provo canyon. In fact that was how the staff had taken all of
the gear up for the camp and that is how I had gone to the camp also. I was
there to present a patriotic slide show and had arrived about the time they
were preparing to eat their dinner meal. As the boys were coming from their
patrol sites this time someone called out that there was a moose in the camp.
Sure enough there was and I was more concerned for the safety of the boys from
this visitor that I had been with the bears at the last camps. I knew a moose
could charge with less provocation than a bear if the boys all suddenly wanted
to see it. I only caught s short glimpse of it while trying to round up the
boys who were trying to find it. I didn’t let them know it was still there and
was finally able to get them to go to the kitchen tent. The moose wandered
around a little longer and we did see it a couple more times before it finally
left for the night. I was very relieved when we no longer could catch short
sightings of it that night and figured that it had moved away from camp.
