Timberline: Carving Scoutmaster
(Timberline
part 10)
I mentioned in the last segment
briefly about the scoutmasters sitting back and letting the boys run the camp.
Well it was at this point in my life where I learned to carve. We had to make
it clear to the staff each time that this what the SM’s were suppose to do and
everyone else was to keep knives in their pocket and pay attention to the
program. It was a challenge a few times but generally worked OK. I started by
first carving little bolo faces for wearing around the neck. After a while
though I found it to be more fun to carve a stave each time we were at camp. I
was usually able to complete a couple of them and would give one of them to an
assistant SM or SPL. It became so fun that I even did it during the years that
I attended Young Women’s camps.
