Timberline: Awaken with a face three
inches from mine
(Timberline
part 15)
The fun of being a Scoutmaster is
often in the little things that happen when you are least expecting them. This
is a simple story about that. One year I was able to talk my nephews into
attending my course even though they were from a different district in the
council. It was fun having them there and already knowing their names and a lot
about them. One night however, I was awaken from a pretty good sleep, something
quite rare for a scoutmaster at camp, with a strange feeling that something was
wrong. As I opened my eyes I was brought quickly to a fully awake state as I
could see in the darkness the face of one of my nephews just three inches from
mine. He hadn’t wanted to turn on a light for fear of waking the other
scoutmaster sleeping across from me in the tent and so he was having to get
real close to see if it was me or not. He was sick and needed a little
attention and had come looking for me to help. I can’t remember anything else
from that night, like what I did to help him or anything else but I can’t
forget the moment I awoke from my deepened state of sleep to that face just three
inches from mine.
